Gaming Maintains Its Dominance Amid Dapp Decline
Despite a significant 22% reduction in active wallets across the decentralized application (dapp) ecosystem, the gaming sector has managed to solidify its status, capturing a notable 25% share of the market. This insight comes from DappRadar’s recently published Q3 2025 report on the state of the dapp industry. Gaming’s resilience is particularly notable as it stands out in an otherwise declining landscape, underscoring its importance as a primary driver of engagement within the Web3 space. The average daily active wallets in the dapp industry dropped to 18.7 million in the third quarter of 2025, a decline of 22.4% compared to the previous quarter. Nevertheless, gaming’s market share increased from 20.1% to 25%, while other sectors experienced wallet activity declines, particularly Social and AI categories. AI wallets fell from 18.6% to 16.8%, and Social dropped from 15.9% to 8.4%.
Gaming Sector Continues to Lead
Even amidst the downturn in overall dapp activity, the gaming category remains the frontrunner, boasting a 25% market share. In terms of NFT (Non-Fungible Token) presence, this sector has also seen gains, now holding the second position with an 18.5% share. According to DappRadar, three of the five top dapps in the third quarter originated from the gaming industry: World of Dypians, a social gaming metaverse; HOT Protocol, which provides gamified services; and KGeN, a platform focused on gaming engagement. However, it is noteworthy that the gaming sector within Web3 still faces challenges in appealing to a broader mainstream audience.
NFT Market Experiences Robust Activity
NFT trading has continued to gain traction in 2025, even with falling average prices. By the end of Q3, over 18 million NFTs had been sold, resulting in a trading volume of $1.6 billion. While the number of sales soared, actual user adoption showed more modest growth, with 2.14 million wallets participating in the trading of 18.1 million NFTs. This represents a striking 158% increase in sales, but only a 28.6% rise in the number of traders, indicating that the surge is largely fueled by existing market participants rather than attracting new users.
Surge in Sports-Themed NFTs
The sports-themed NFT market is witnessing explosive growth, with trading volume skyrocketing by 337% to $71 million and sales increasing by 143% to reach 4.1 million. Platforms such as Sorare, which provide fantasy sports experiences across basketball, baseball, and football, are significantly contributing to this multi-million dollar volume. Conversely, the gaming NFT sector has not fared as well, experiencing a 17% drop in trading volume and a 32% decrease in sales.
NFTs Expand Beyond Collectibles
The report also emphasizes the evolving nature of NFTs as they increasingly integrate with real-world assets (RWAs) and decentralized finance (DeFi). For instance, Courtyard has begun tokenizing physical trading cards, allowing users to trade digital versions or redeem physical items; this initiative alone generated $145 million in Q3. Additionally, Token Works has launched an NFT Strategy protocol that facilitates automated trading of CryptoPunks through $PNKSTR tokens, enabling users to gain exposure to valuable NFTs without needing direct ownership.
DeFi Shows Resilience
Decentralized finance (DeFi) continues to exhibit strong capital inflows, with the total value locked (TVL) reaching a record high of $237 billion. DappRadar noted that this figure represents the highest ever recorded, and the growth in tokenization of real-world assets, along with ongoing developments in stablecoins, may herald a significant influx of liquidity into the market. Ethereum (ETH) remains the leading DeFi chain by TVL, despite a minor decline in value. Solana (SOL), in second place, experienced the largest drop among major chains, primarily due to decreasing interest in memecoins and projects like Pump.fun. Conversely, BNB Chain and emerging networks such as Hyperliquid and Plasma are showing strong positive momentum.
Implications for the Industry
As the gaming dapps emerge as a primary force in driving Web3 engagement, the broader ecosystem is grappling with a decline in overall activity. This highlights the critical role that gaming applications play in sustaining interest in decentralized technologies.
Understanding Gaming Dapps
What are gaming dapps? They are decentralized applications built on blockchain networks, providing games, in-game assets, and rewards directly to players without the involvement of central authorities. How do gaming dapps differ from traditional games? Unlike conventional games, gaming dapps utilize blockchain technology, enabling players to have true ownership of in-game items, verifiable scarcity, and economies driven by player interactions. How do gaming dapps integrate with NFTs and DeFi? Many gaming dapps incorporate NFTs for in-game items and leverage DeFi mechanisms for tokenized rewards, staking, or trading within their ecosystems. What challenges do these games face? Despite their market leadership, they encounter difficulties in reaching mainstream audiences, volatility in token prices, and the need to maintain secure blockchain infrastructures. How can individuals begin using gaming dapps? To get started, users must set up a crypto wallet, gain access to supported blockchain networks, and utilize platforms like DappRadar to discover popular gaming dapps.
